For my project I am developing a Summer sermon series on the Book of Galatians called "Let Freedom Ring" It will consist of 10 messages as we go through all 6 chapters of this powerful letter. It will start Memorial Day weekend with the central message falling on the 7th week which is the weekend after Independence Day. I like going through entire Book in order to get the whole counsel of God, that is why I opted for a longer series not jumping around in the letter but following it all the way through. It may become a 12 week I am currently going through chapter 5 so I am not quite sure on how the last messages will play out yet. It will either be 10 or 12 week series. Chapter 5 will be my focus because it is here Paul transitions from defending freedom to living in freedom the application part of this letter so to speak.
I chose this book because of the focus on Grace. In my personal life right now I need this reminder as I pursue ministry through these classes, it is easy for me to fall into a works mentality thinking that in some way I can please God in my self effort. I need to be reminded I do NOT have to do this I GET to do this!! I believe many older Christians get bogged down with this especially in smaller churches where there is a lack of help, thinking they have to do A, B, and C. They forgot how they came to Christ and need this beautiful yet strong reminder to get back to a relationship with Jesus that is the work of God really, to believe in the one He has sent.
What I expect the Holy Spirit to accomplish through this series is to correct these false ideas, or what Paul calls the "other gospels" And there is a lot out there today. J.W, Mormons. 7th Day Adventist, Health and Wealth, and the Mergent Church. To rebuke Judaizing in the church today, and there is much of that also. You must tithe, must be baptized, must read your Bible and the laws keep piling up. If we try to keep one we gotta keep them all and that is not possible. I would pray that all of us would have a better understanding of grace and what it means to be free. It does not mean we can live any way we want. (Rom 6), instead the Holy Spirit is now the law inside us motivating and guiding us into all these things which are pleasing and helpful in our relationship to Him. In a nutshell I believe this letter causes us to fall more in love with Jesus as we see the gospel on full display and in turn that has a powerful impact on our mindset and desire to serve and love as He. It frees us of all that man made religion, you gotta dress this way, sing this way , pray in this order, etc. We get to take on Jesus' yoke which is easy and His burden is light.
